Implementing partner:

Between 2020 and 2023, Instituto Justiça (IJ) supported Instituto Arara Azul (IAA) through the “Adopt a Nest” campaign, contributing with monitoring, management, and protection actions for natural and artificial nests in the Pantanal.

This initiative, which continues to this day, enables the safe reproduction of hyacinth macaws and the technical monitoring of each chick. The project has been led for more than 35 years by biologist Neiva Guedes, PhD. and aims to conserve populations of the hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), the largest parrot species in the world.

Located in the southern Pantanal region of Mato Grosso, IAA conducts scientific research, management, and environmental education actions across an area of 400,000 hectares, covering 54 farms in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

In 1999, the population of hyacinth macaws in the Pantanal was fewer than 1,500 individuals. Today, thanks to the work of Instituto Arara Azul, this number has increased to approximately 5,000 animals, also benefiting more than 40 other species that share the same habitat.

Through this partnership, IJ has taken another step in its commitment to preserving biodiversity and supporting scientific projects with environmental and social impact.
