In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Instituto Justiça (IJ) supported the União Amazônia Viva project, an emergency initiative focused on protecting Indigenous peoples, riverine communities, extractivist communities, and quilombola communities in the Amazon region, groups that have historically been vulnerable and were facing a mortality rate 150% higher than the national average.

These communities, deeply connected to their territories, maintain ways of life sustained by their relationship with the forest and nature. In a public health crisis scenario, their access to health care, information, and basic supplies became even more limited.

The mobilization raised BRL 6 million, allocated to the acquisition of hospital supplies and support for health units operating in the region. Part of the resources was also used to purchase food baskets, hygiene kits, and personal protective equipment (PPE), promoting food security and health care for the beneficiary populations.

The initiative reaffirmed Instituto Justiça’s commitment to the value of life, cultural diversity, and equitable access to health and dignity, especially in historically underserved territories.
