Arara Azul Institute
Between 2020 and 2023, the Justiça Institute (IJ) supported the Arara Azul Institute (IAA) through the campaign "Adopt a Nest," contributing to actions of monitoring, management, and protection of natural and artificial nests in the Pantanal.
This initiative, which continues to this day, allows for the safe reproduction of hyacinth macaws and the technical monitoring of each chick. The project has been led for over 35 years by biologist Dr. Neiva Guedes, and its mission is to conserve the populations of the hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), the largest parrot in the world.
Located in the Southern Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, the IAA conducts scientific research, management, and environmental education actions in an area of 400 thousand hectares, encompassing 54 farms in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.
The blue macaws depend on the manduvi (Sterculia apetala) for nesting — the process of building and using nests to lay eggs and raise chicks. They also feed on fruits from palm trees like acuri (Scheelea phalerata) and bocaiúva (Acrocomia aculeata), making the preservation of these plant species essential for their survival.
In 1999, the population of hyacinth macaws in the Pantanal was less than 1,500 individuals. Today, thanks to the work of the Instituto Arara Azul, this number has increased to about 5,000 animals, also benefiting more than 40 other species that share the same habitat.
Through this partnership, the IJ has taken another step in its commitment to the preservation of biodiversity and support for environmental and social impact scientific projects.
